Accademia Gallery: opening hours and practical tips

In 2026 the Accademia Gallery has new opening hours and a new visitor regulation, approved on 24 July. Some pages on the museum’s website still show previous information, for example about last entry. This guide summarises the current rules, the quietest times to visit, what to bring and what to leave at the hotel, and which museums in Florence can be visited for free.

From 15 March 2026 all museums in the Accademia Gallery of Florence and Bargello Museums group share the same opening hours. The visitor regulations of 24 July 2026 then set the rules on bags, photography, food and clothing.

When sources are not aligned, this is stated clearly here. The general advice is simple: check your ticket for the entry time and visit the official page before you leave, as special openings and closures may change.

The short answer

The Accademia Gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 to 18:50 and is closed on Mondays; it is normally also closed on 25 December and 1 January. According to the 2026 regulations, the last entry is 40 minutes before closing. Bags and backpacks larger than 40 x 30 x 18 centimetres are not allowed, and the museum states it has no cloakroom for bulky luggage. There is no formal dress code: only swimwear and bare chests are prohibited.

What are the Accademia Gallery’s opening hours?

From Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:15 to 18:50. The museum is closed on Mondays and usually also on 25 December and 1 January.

The single schedule has been in effect since 15 March 2026 for all museums in the group, according to the notice from the Ministry of Culture. Under the 2026 regulations, the last entry is 40 minutes before closing, so at 18:10. Some pages on the museum’s website still list 18:20: it is best to refer to the time printed on the ticket.

On certain dates, the museum opens exceptionally, even on Mondays or public holidays: in 2026, for example, this happened on Easter Monday, 1 May and 1 June. The press also reports an evening opening scheduled for 30 November 2026, from 17:15 to 21:00. For these openings, it is best to check the official website close to the date.

What is the best time to visit the Accademia?

The first time slot at opening, at 8:15, is the most recommended by travel guides. Winter months are generally quieter; the first Sunday of the month is the busiest day.

Reservation is not mandatory, but official sources recommend it, especially from April to September, on weekends and public holidays. With a timed ticket you use the reserved entrance; those who buy the ticket at the ticket office on the day enter through the non-reserved entrance and queue. In any case, everyone goes through security control.

On the first Sunday of the month, entry is free, but reservations are not active: you can only enter by queuing, and the lines are usually long. Those who want to save time should choose another day. The differences between the various tickets are explained in the guide to tickets.

How early should you arrive at the Accademia?

The official sources consulted do not specify a precise advance time. Offers on GetYourGuide ask you to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, depending on the product.

With the official pre-booked ticket, you go to the reserved entrance for your time slot, taking into account the security check. For GetYourGuide products, the offer’s instructions apply:

  • il official timed ticket must be collected at an agency at Via degli Alfani 115 R, arriving 10 minutes before the time slot;
  • for the ticket with audioguide the voucher is exchanged for the paper ticket at an office near the Gallery; anyone arriving late loses priority entry and must join the general queue;
  • la guided tour departs from Via Ricasoli 39 and asks you to arrive 15 minutes early; late entry is not permitted.

The official ticket offer reminds visitors that the so-called skip-the-line refers to the ticket office queue, not the security check, where during peak hours you may have to wait a few minutes.

Can you bring bags and backpacks into the Accademia?

Only if small. The 2026 regulations ban suitcases and backpacks larger than 40 x 30 x 18 centimetres, and the museum states it has no cloakroom for bulky luggage.

The museum’s website is explicit: with no cloakroom, visitors arriving with large bags, backpacks or helmets will not be allowed in. A ministerial list still mentions a cloakroom service, but this conflicts with the museum’s information: it’s best to assume that large luggage cannot be left.

Other visitor regulations:

  • non-foldable umbrellas and sharp or blunt objects must be left in the designated areas at the entrance;
  • food and drinks in open containers, cans and glass bottles are prohibited; small sealed water bottles up to half a litre are allowed, according to the museum’s website;
  • photography is permitted for personal use, without flash, tripod or selfie stick;
  • animals are only allowed if they are guide or assistance dogs.

Is there a dress code at the Accademia Gallery? Can you enter in shorts?

There is no formal dress code, and shorts are allowed. The rules only prohibit swimwear and bare chests.

At the Accademia, you can enter wearing shorts and bare shoulders. Things change if you visit a church on the same day: for the David and Duomo tour, for example, the offer requires covered shoulders and knees to enter the Cathedral. The tour is only in English, for groups up to 18 people, and includes Accademia entry only in some options.

Those who want to combine the museum and churches in summer can bring a scarf or a light shirt to wear when needed, as long as the bag meets the allowed size.

Is the Accademia Gallery wheelchair accessible?

Yes. According to the museum, all open rooms are wheelchair accessible, with an elevator and an accessible restroom on the ground floor.

The accessible restroom is on the ground floor near the elevator. People with disabilities and one companion enter for free. Regarding strollers, neither the regulations nor the museum’s website provide details: it’s best to ask before visiting.

For information, the Ministry provides the phone number +39 055 0987100 and the email address [email protected]. For reservations, there is the Firenze Musei call center at +39 055 294883.

Which museums in Florence are free?

Entry to the Duomo is free. State museums, including the Accademia, are free on the first Sunday of the month and for visitors under 18 every day.

An overview of the main free entry options:

  • Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore: the interior is free, no ticket required, from Monday to Saturday from 10:15 to 15:45. The dome, baptistery, bell tower and museum require a ticket.
  • State museums (Accademia Gallery, Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, Boboli, Bargello, Medici Chapels, Palazzo Davanzati, Orsanmichele, San Marco): free on the first Sunday of the month, no reservation needed, and on April 25, June 2 and November 4.
  • Under 18s: free entry to state museums every day.
  • Civic museums (Palazzo Vecchio, Museo Novecento, Santa Maria Novella, Brancacci Chapel): on the first Sunday of the month, entry is free only for residents of the Metropolitan City of Florence, not for tourists; under 18s have free entry every day.
  • Outdoors: the Loggia dei Lanzi with its sculptures and the replicas of David in Piazza della Signoria and at Piazzale Michelangelo.

Those who also want to visit the Uffizi on the same day can find distances and combinations in the guide Uffizi or Accademia.

Is it worth booking the ticket in advance?

Yes, especially from April to September and on weekends. With an official timed reservation, you use the reserved entrance, avoiding the ticket line.

The official ticket can be booked online or via the call center at +39 055 294883; tickets are non-transferable. Those who prefer an agency-managed service can book the official timed ticket on GetYourGuide: depending on the offer, cancellation is free up to 24 hours in advance, the ticket is collected at Via degli Alfani 115 R and no guide is included. Firenzecard holders must still book a time slot.

For those who want someone to explain the works, the 60-minute guided tour includes timed entry. What to see once inside is explained in the guide what to see in the museum, and the history of the statue in the one on Michelangelo’s David.
